My church PC's accesses Powerchurch from a server via a mapped drive. I am building a new server for them. What is the proper way to move the installation from one PC to another?

I loaded PC9 and the latest updates on the new server. The old one has the same, plus the database of course. Is it just a matter now of copying the whole PCLUS9 directory over? Or just certain database files? I want everything to be the same as it is.

I saw that thread, but since I had the original media to install it properly on the new box, I wanted to know if I should still run the netsetup again.

If you follow the thread, you'll see that yes, you have to run netsetup again. In fact, anytime you move the main, shared Powerchurch directory to a new computer you have to run NETSETUPx (where x is the version number).

In your case, since you don't want to do a directory copy (which is the easiest way to move the installation), I'd do a complete backup on the old installation's data using the Powerchurch backup utility, then restore that data to the new installation using the restore utility.

Our church recently purchased a new computer for the office. I, just as recently took over most of the secretarial duties that require the computer. Our old secretary used PC+ 8 to post contributions and I think that's about all she used it for. She also left months before I took over and the computer she was using was a mess, w/viruses and what not. I got rid of the viruses etc but was not able to talk the poor old thing (4+yrs old) into functioning well again without reformatting and starting over, with no rescue discs available. So we purchased a new computer.

Not being familiar with PC+ I simply copied the entire contents of the program to my flash drive. (This is where my naivete is gonna show ) I then ran netsetup (at least I think that's what I ran) on my puter at home. I thought I was putting the program on my machine, but apparently I was just running it directly off the flash drive. Figured this out later when I was going to do a bit of exploring and it said, "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Powerchurch Plus 8.Ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again." So I plugged the drive in and it worked. I seem to have access to everything that was in the original.

If this option is going to work with all the available features, that would be awesome, as I plan on doing much of my work at home.

Has anyone else used PC+8 this way? Will this also work with PC+10?

It should work, but you can expect the program to be much slower than it would be if you moved it off the flash drive onto your C: drive. The data transfer rates are much faster with internal hard drives than USB connected flash drives.

As you've demonstrated, yes, that'll work, and there's no reason the same thing shouldn't work with 10. However, be aware that USB flash drives are much slower (particularly for writing) than a hard drive. There's also an issue of limited number of writes, but it's probably not that big of an issue.

Any computer you'd want to run it on this way would need to have netsetup run on it from the flash drive. That copies a couple of necessary files to your windows directory.

Still make regular backups onto a different media device!!
