Activity and Skills Numbering - Starting out how?

Post by cmapastorkelvin »

Starting to setup our activities and skills in powerchurch and I am not clear how.

In the book on page 98 they show an example like the following:

1000 SUNDAY SCHOOL (MAJOR CATEGORY)
1001 Grade 1 (Pre-School)

What is the Major Category a Department, Type, It's really confusing at least to me.

Please help me understand what the Major Category is and then the sub-categorys and how to put them in powerchurch.

Danny,

what exactly are you trying to do? Some detailed questions would enable the forum members to offer some advice.

Hierarchical relationship?

Post by Shelley »

I too am having difficulty planning codes. I have read all the previous posts I could find on the subject and it helped to clarify a lot. I think I could finally get a grasp on it if I understood the hierarchical relationship between activities/skills, departments, types and roles. Especially types.

Additionally, what features of the program are dependent on how you set up activities/skills, department, type and role codes? I have gathered reports and how you can search for data. I have learned that "activities" is where attendance can be found and that activities are tied to department. What else would be useful for me to know before I set these up?

Blessings,
Shelley

FWIW ... the only thing 'hierachical' in the system is, IMHO, Departments and Activities. Roles can be used in most any activity, and skill is just a numerical way of showing how much experience (or interest) someone has in whatever activity is being added to the person's list.

For instance, you have Departments of Worship, Music, Christian Ed.
Under Worship, you have an activity to track attendence: 11am Worship.
You really do not need to add any role here (other than member) and skill is not needed.
However, also under Worship, you can have Lectionary Reader. The role here could also be member, or could be coordinator (the person who helps to setup the schedule for the Lectionary Readers). The skill could range anywhere from 0 (no previous experience, but willing to learn) to 10 (has performed this function many times).

I believe you see where I'm going with this.

My questions relate to the program structure. Perhaps a flow chart or tree or even an umbrella illustration would have been a better way for me to ask my question. How do these things relate to each other in the program? Can anybody give it to me in a flow chart type explanation?

Wonderful days are here,
Shelley
