FICA issue

Post by Ada676 »

Help! I noticed the wrong amounts for SS & Medicare were being taken out of most of the employees' checks. I believe I have it fixed now, but how do I go about making this right. For example, the employee paid into SS 136.46, but should have paid 222.80 which makes her owing $86.34. I had to write a check for our Quarterly taxes so they would be right. Do I add an additional FICA W/H line and manually put that amount in so it deducts it from the employee owing and makes it right? Advise please, still trying to figure out this system. We use the 11.5 version. Thank You!

It appears that you've not adjusted the employee Social Security withholding table from last year. It should be at the same rate as the employer, which I believe is 6.2%

The easiest way to figure this out is, as you thought, to add another pay item for SS employee withholding, but make it a manual entry pay item, where you figure out how much to take out. You may want to do this over a few pay periods so as not to affect the employee's take home pay all that much.

Here is a Knowledge Base article that goes over all the Federal tax tables, this includes Income Tax W/H as well as SS & Medicare:
