W-2 problem

Post by BobD »

When I try to print W-2's, the program adds the taxable amount to the particular tax item. For example, if Wages in Box one are $10,000 and Withholding is $600, Box 2 shows $10,600. Boxes 2,4, and 6 are all this way. I have appropriate boxes checked for all taxable employees, but all are shown with the tax item added to the taxable amount. I realize I can manually make changes, but being lazy I would prefer that the computer do the work for me. Computer glitch, or have I messed up somewhere? I am running Version 9 on XLT. Thanks

Bob D.

In your Payroll setup (Maintain Item Descriptions), make sure that your income items do not have anything other 1, 3, 5, 7, 16, or 18 checked (as appropriate). This is a pretty common mistake where folks think they need to mark 2 (Federal Tax withheld) because the income item in question is subject to Federal Tax.

In your case, where 2, 4, and 6 are this way, I'm positive the thinking was "this income item has federal tax, social security tax, and medicare withheld, so those boxes will need to be checked." Not true! If you go into your Maintain Item Descriptions and uncheck those boxes for your Income items, then re-run your W2s, everything should be ok.

Zaphod: Thanks to you it took me about 45 seconds to get everything in accord. Are current Version 9 instructions clear and concise on this, or am I missing something? Thanks a lot.

Well ... I don't have my version 9 manual handy, but I'm assuming that the Version 10 manual is much the same, as not much changed in Payroll.

The W2 information tab on the item descriptions basically says Show This Item . The manual says:
Select the checkbox associated with the box on the W-2 to which this item will be added. For example, select the Federal Tax Withheld checkbox, and the amount of this payroll item [my note: we're talking the withholding amount] appears in the Federal Tax Withheld box on the W-2.

The version 10 manual is much the same as the version 9 manual. Of course, some features have changed / some new features were added. A lot of the existing text was changed, in the v10 manual, to try and improve on some negative feedback we had gotten about prior manuals.

We hope this new manual is much more helpful!

Just a note ... the SPAMMER is having you link to a location that will try to load a TROJAN HORSE program on your system. I checked it out using a 'non-windows' operating system, and the file is definitely malicious.
