Posting Credit Memos

I have a question about credit memos. We use invoices and payments for registration to our sports ministry. One of our parents over paid by 10.00 and wants to credit that to the next sports season. I created an invoice for 90.00, and properly posted the 90.00 to the invoice. I created a credit memo for 10.00, and posted everything. However, my check register is off that 10.00. I know I did something wrong I am just not sure what I did. How do I get the 10.00 to show up in the check register?
We have PC 10 and have been using PC for about 1 1/2 years
