Entering a donated vehicle

Post by Turning Point »

How do I enter a vehicle that was donated to our church? We are going to use it for our food pantry, not re-sell it.

PC+ is only used for cash (check, cash, credit card, ACH, etc.) donations. Non-cash donations can be acknowledged via a letter indicating date of donation, description of donation, etc.. but NOT the value of the donation. Templates for this can be found online. If the donation has a value of $500 or more, you will need to use IRS forms 8282 and 8283. See this link for further information on these forms:

https://www.google.com/search?q=form+82 ... e&ie=UTF-8

Also, if the value will be greater than $5000, you will need to get an appraisal from a qualified appraiser.

https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profi ... 20property.

Between these 2 links, you should be able to get the information you need.

As was mentioned, Powerchurch really isn't a good place to add such donations. The instructions listed in that post gives you all the necessary info needed.

However, if you want to track the vehicle as an asset, that's a different question.

I see I did ask the wrong question. We do want to track it as an asset.

OK ... whole different bucket of fish.

First, you need to get a good valuation. That said unless you really want to be able to track it with depreciation, adding it as an asset is really not necessary for a church, because you can't use the depreciation unless there is some sort of state tax that the church falls under.

That said, this thread should assist:
