Thinking of doing Payroll via PC+: How hard is it?

Post by ASmith11 »

We currently use ADP for our payroll service. They do everything- all I do is fax in the hours and if there are any changes, I let them know. They handle withholding and paying the taxes and all that.

I am thinking that if we upgrade to the new version of PC+ and integrate with Vanco, we can offer direct deposit and I can do payroll from my desk vs. using ADP. It would save us quite a bit on fees, would require more time on my part but that is OK.

My questions, for those who use it:

- How do you figure out the withholding and then get it to the IRS? I'm nervous about handling taxes.
- how easy is it to set up direct deposit? Any problems or glitches I should be aware of?
- taxable fringe benefits: Can I set those up?
- housing benefits: ditto?

Anything else I should think of or be aware of before I suggest taking this on? I don't want to say I'll go for it, then get in way over my head  Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Angie

1. The program will figure out the withholding based on the tax tables which you enter from the IRS pub 15 (I believe). It will even give you the information you would need to send in the 941 form with the check to the government.

2. Also not a problem, very easy to setup in the new version

3. Also ditto ...

One of the best things to do is take the ONLINE class on Payroll that is being offered by Powerchurch. It is lead by Jeff, who is one of the best !!

(shameless brown nosing there)

FWIW .. we're getting ready to revamp the payroll here and are getting ready to take the online class that is setup for today. I believe the next one is scheduled for 10 am on the 31st of March.

I agree that taking the class would be very helpful. The payroll part of V11 is much improved over previous versions. Once you get the tax tables set up it's very easy to process the payroll each month. With the new version you can print payroll checks or the stubs if you automatically deposit employee's pay.

I starting using VANCO last year and it works great. The only thing is you have to enter the payroll at least 5 business days prior to amount actually being transferred to employee's bank accounts. They do send you a reminder e-mail to let you know when you have to send them the information. I use the web entry option which means you log onto their system and enter the payroll check amount they transfer to the employee. If you have a larger payroll you can also setup a file transfer with them so you don't have to manually enter any numbers. The cost is very reasonable, $5 per month and 25 cents per transaction. You might also check with your bank, some of them also offer this service.

For federal tax deposits you can sign up for EFPTS with IRS which makes sending the tax payments to them very easy. Just log on to their web site either monthly, quarterly and enter the tax due. PC gives you all the data you need for this. State taxes will vary by state.
