Cannot delete release accounts set up in error

I am in the process of setting up my chart of accounts and set up several funds as restricted funds in error (they should have been set up as unrestricted designations). I set up new unrestricted funds with the same name (different account numbers) and merged the old ones into the new ones.
In reviewing this, I'm not happy with the set up and would prefer to have one unrestricted designated fund and use the contribution designations; however, I cannot delete the funds from the chart of accounts. Whenever I try to delete them, I get a message that there is a dependency. When I run the Account Dependency report, there is a corresponding "release account" connected but no account number assigned to the release account. I cannot get rid of the account due to this dependency but I can't access the release account to delete it first.
I have attempted to reindex the file several times to clear this and it will not clear. Short of rerunning the account set up (which would completely mess everything up), the only option I see is to uncheck the "active" account box.
There is no data in this file whatsoever - we are trying to get through our initial set up. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
