Reversing Reversals

I wrote a check (number 1235) for $1289.00 on December 1st. It was split between two expense accounts but I entered the wrong amounts for the expense accounts.

It has already cleared the bank and my reconciliation report.

Now I am doing EOY financial reports and the expense accounts are off.

I tried to reverse the transaction without the proper knowledge of how to do so. I probably should have just voided the check and/or made the change in the Fund Accounting window...but I didn't! Instead, I went into Fund Accounting and clicked View Posted Transactions. I found the check number and then hit the Reverse Button. Then I went to Modify Unposted Transactions and entered a mirror-image of the original check but changed the amounts in the expense accounts. So, I had one called "1235-Reversed" (check number) and a new one I named "1235-Correction."

Then I posted them. Now I think it's worse. They both show up as additions in my check register and my Income/Expense statement is now off by a greater margin. My check register is off by $2578 ($1289 doubled).

Now I went in to see if I can "reverse a reversal" and "reverse a correction" and it let me. So now those are sitting in my "Modify Unposted Transactions" and I'm afraid to do anything about them before asking for help.

Can anybody help me out of my confusion?

You can reverse the reversal.

I suggest you do that, and get back to the original check problem.

Then, go into Accounts Payable and void the check.

FWIW, I am finishing up our EOY statements this evening. If you have more difficultly, I will probably be around.

Thank-you, John. I did what you said and it has fixed my check register/reconciliation problem. I really am grateful for this site.

However, my EOY reports are still off and my brain is tired. I will return to this project tomorrow - His mercies are new every morning!
