I have set up my chart of accounts numerous times -- most of them just practicing. I set it up again and went live Jan 1 but had problems so last week decided to wipe it out and start again.
One of my problems was that I had my checking account as a level 4 item. As level 5's under the checking account I had about 5 or 6 accounts which are monies of certain entities. When it was "general fund" money I just put it to that level 4 checking account. It was a little confusing to my board last week so when putting this together I decided to actually put a general fund account as a level 5 with the others and keep the checking acct. as a level 4 but as a total of all the level 5's.
I neglected to change the level 4 chking acct from detail to group. I have tried several things to get rid of it, change it, etc. I can't seem to accomplish this. THe account dependencies doesn't show anything but the trial balance does -- I believe I probably fingered it in the accting set up as the trial balance shows that beginning balance.
If I can't change it am I going to have issues with the acct being a detail acct rather than a group acct? I would like the level 4 acct to give me my check book balance but then the level 5's break down that balance. Am I going to get that in my current configuration? Please don't tell me to start over again. I am so TIRED of deleting accts. and adding accts. etc. etc. I am ready to move forward!!
WHen none of my reports were coming out like I wanted -- including those that had group accounts that were "correct" -- I went back to my manual and finally found the descriptions about detail and group accounts. Even if I could get the acct. changed to group it wouldn't do what I thought so I need to rethink this and once again.....restart accting. THanks anyway.
You can't change an account from a detail to a group. The only option you have is to delete the detail account and add it back as a group account. You are right the reason you cannot delete the 1110 account is the accounting setup assistant created a transaction to that account for the beginning balance. You could however could change that account to level 5 and then add a new level 4 account for the group.
What specifically are you trying to accomplish that is not working?
My checking account has monies from different entities and I wanted to have one account that was the total of the account but then accts under it for each of these entities. Since posting that I figured out that even if I had the group acct. correct I wouldn't be able to use it where I thought I could. I posted again and Zaphod told me to use the same 4-digit acct. number with differnt sub accounts -- a concept I had tried but badly!! I had originally set up sub accts for these little entities but all with different 4-digit numbers as well!!! So I am going to try setting everything up under 1110 but with a sub and see if that gets me what I am looking for!!
