non-cash contributions or contributions of goods/supplies

good morning,

If someone makes a contribution to an outreach program by donating supplies or food or what have you, can I give them a credit as a contribution? Obviously I would only post this in the Contributions module as no cash has come through the church- but would the donations of goods be a tax-deductible contribution and able to show on their statements?

We get this quite often and would like the donators to receive credit. I saw in another thread that I could set up the contribution type to this effect so that would help.

Any thoughts or input are welcomed.

Here is what I have done recently. The person who donated the supplies gave me receipts for those items. I wrote her a check for the amount she spent on them. She endorsed the check to the church and put it in the offering plate the following Sunday. I processed it in the same manner as all other offerings/contributions.

FWIW ... prior to the change allowing the creation of the contribution type (IE: Check, Cash, EFT, Goods, etc), we used to handle this through a letter sent from the Financial Secretary listing the amount of the donation and so on. This letter was good enough to qualify as a receipt for IRS purposes.

Now that you can add those Contribution types, you could create the type of GOODS, and then setup a special Contribution Fund that would be used to list such types of gifts. Since you would not be needing to post to the Funds Accounting module, you would leave the accounts in the Maintain Contribution Funds screen at the default of all zeros.

When you would post you would get a warning that not all Contribution Funds have valid account numbers, but you can bypass the warning, and the system will only post those funds that have links to Funds Accounting.

Then on the regular contributor's contributions report, they would see contributions of cash, checks and goods on that report.
