If any one has a Treasurer in their Finance Office. Could tell what their duties are and how many days a week are they in the office?
We are in need of restructing due to illness.

We have a finance pastor whose responsibility includes payables, contributions, payroll and maintaining the chart of accounts.
This is a full-time paid staff position. This person holds credentials in the church, teaches Sunday School and preaches periodically. Yes, that's a lot of responsibility.

We have a small church that has $195,000 per year in tithes in offering. We have a financial secretary who is part-time and paid to do payroll and a lot of the administrative tasks. We have just added an administrator but I am not if they will be paid to count money and maintain the PowerChurch system. I think the treasurer makes the deposit and signs the checks.

I'm the treasurer of my church, and my job is pretty much similar to what was mentioned above. My position is a part-time one with a small stipend, and I was approved by the church's Vestry which is the Episcopal Church's equivalent of a board of trustees or parish council. I pay bills, supervise the weekly count, keep the books, generate reports for the vestry's monthly meetings and to the congregation for the annual meeting as well as quarterly snapshots of the finances and I also generate quarterly contribution reports for the congregation as well. I also deal with any financial matters with the diocese. I figure I put in approx 10-15 hours a week doing church business. We have a Budget and Finance Committee that puts together the annual budget. hth

I went to the website you had listed for the church to get the answers myself, but a "site" came up that the filter won't let me type the word here. You might want to check that out, I know that often happens when a church lets it's domain go.

At the current church I'm a member of, and at my last one, the Treasurer position was a volunteer position. The Session of the church had to vote to OK the appointment.
At my last church we split the income and outgo duties, so that there was a Contributions Secretary responsible for the training and supervision of the counters, the posting of contributions to Funds Accounting, and preparing the quarterly contribution reports.
The Treasurer took care of the books, the payments (Payroll and other such items), posting and depositing non-contribution income, and monthly reports to Session.
In this way neither position overwhelmed the person who volunteered to do it.

I am the Sec/Treas for the Corp. This covers both church and Pre-school. It was a paid position before I got here, but it is now a volunteer position. I do everything involved with finances. It is overwhelming at times. I work 3-4 hours daily 5 days a week. I do all except the annual report, I give those figures to the pastor who makes a Power point. We are currently going thru an audit, just to see if there are any areas for improvement, and there have been a couple. We want the finances to be exact.

FWIW ... I am a firm believer that the person who tracks contributions, should not be the same person who writes checks and maintains the books. Our counters (at least two people who are not related) count on Sunday, and drop off the deposit in the overnight deposit at the bank. The Treasurer then gets the confirmation slip from the bank in the mail, and verifies it with the transactions created in Funds Accounting when the contributions are posted.

Our church receives about 300,000 in tithes and offerings. The treasurer and assistant treasurer oversee the counting and deposits(always two people present), the budget and are responsible to look over all the checks after the office assistant prepares them for payment. Two signers are required for each check (we have six gentlemen who may sign). The office assistant does the payroll for 3 people, including the payroll taxes, and bookkeeping data entry, both receipts and expenditures, but it is all reviewed by the treasurer. The decision making responsibility rests with the treasurer. The Treasurer reports on the finances to both the elders and business council. We also do an accountability review annually. It is not an audit, but similar. The ladies and gentlemen who conduct the review are NOT the treasurer, assistant treasurer or office assistant. They issue an independent report to the council and congregation.
