When writing a check for a missionary, is it possible to record two sources of the income, post to one expense, and cut one check?
We collected an offering for one of missionaries, another group wanted to use some of their funds for the missionary as well. So we entered the amount from the fund the offering was coming from and the amount from the group's fund. When we went to try to excute what was entered we received a message the books weren't balanced even though transaction balanced at entry level. Variations didn't matter: e.g., A - two income accounts $250, $50, one expense 300.00 or B. two income accounts $250, $50, two entries from same expense $250, $50 (Doesn't make sense to enter expense account twice but we gave it a whirl)
Am I seeking an impossibility or is something else wrong? To get the job done we just wrote two checks.
two funds, one expense, one check?

Re: two funds, one expense, one check?
When issuing a check, you normally wouldn't include an income account as the Credit account. Rather, it is usually the checking account:
CR 02-1110-000 checking $300.00
DB 02-5479-000 mission expense $300.00
If you want to keep a record of two sources of income, you could create two expense accounts, each one correlating to one of the income sources:
CR 02-1110-000 checking $300.00
DB 02-5479-000 mission expense - source A $250.00
DB 02-5874-000 mission expense - source B $50.00
CR 02-1110-000 checking $300.00
DB 02-5479-000 mission expense $300.00

Re: two funds, one expense, one check?
Nevermind, the bookkeeper figured it out [unbeknown to me -but glad she did
]
John, there are more levels in our system than the checking account. There are several "vitual checking accounts" before the actual check is written.
Mission Gift Fund "Checking" - Income (restricted)
Mission Gift - Expense
Women's Ministry Fund "Checking" - Income
Women's Ministry Missions Gift - New expense account
Since Mission Gift expense account was directly linked to the Mission Gift Fund, we needed to create another expense account for this transaction for the Women's Ministry since money was coming from that fund. We had been trying to post the total amount to the Mission Gift Expense account.
(The person who normally helps the bookkeeper is no longer here, so being somewhat new she figured it out on her own - kudos to her!! She had said she was going to cut two checks) And she keeps telling me she doesn't understand double entry accounting
