FInding a payment by check number

Post by stjohnd »

Good morning,

IF at all possible, is there a way to find a payment by check number?

I have a parishioner who is telling me that he has a cancelled check for the March stewardship donations, however, I cannot find it at all.

Is there a way to find where that check was posted??

Thank you

Two things I'm going to assume: first, that this came in through Contributions, and second that you are recording check numbers when you record the Contributions.

First, I would go to his contribution records and look to see if there is a contribution listed for the date he specifies, if you record check numbers, then you would see the number there. If you don't, at least the amounts should match.

Second, if you couldn't find it there, then you may need to create a Custom Report in Contributions:

1. Go into Contributions -> Other Output -> Custom Reports
2. When the popup appears asking what you want to query, select Posted Data.
3. Then use the query creation tool to select the following as filters (change the date, fund number and amount to what you need to look for)

Contribution Date is equal to 03/03/2014 and
Contribution Fund Number is equal to 100 and
Contribution Amount is equal to 10.00

This should pull the data, you'll then be asked to select what you want printed, select the first name & last name to create the list.

Hope this helps.

Something that may be easier than creating a custom report:

Run the Posted Contributions report from under Contributions > Reports - Contributions. When you have the report up on the screen, click the Find Text (binoculars) button in the report viewer toolbar. Search for the check number.

Sure, make it seem easy :P

However, if they don't keep the check number, then the custom report would work ;)
