Word3 won't open save file

I saved my end of year contribution report to Word but when I try to load it into word, I get an error message telling me that my registry policy setting will not open the save version of the report. So how do I get Word 3 to open the report?

It seems that Microsoft has helped us mortals once more with a change that causes this. There is a Powerchurch Knowledge Base article that talks about this along with other issues caused by the new MS Vista operating system. While you may still be running Windows XP, the area that concerns you is titled PowerChurch Plus’ Word docs won’t open in Office 2007 (affects all versions):

It looks like the only fix is to edit the Windows Registry. I suggest that if you want to get this fixed, you have someone familiar with editing the Registry do it as you can completely crash the computer and lose data if any edit is done incorrectly.

Will there be a future fix for this in PC+? I often save reports in Word and email them to board members. If they also make the upgrade to Word 2003 SP3 as I have - Microsoft messes us up again - they will not be able to open them. I have gotten around this for now by saving the reports in a PDF file format. In the long run is this in fact a better solution?

If you really need to open these Word files here is location where you can get a patch from Microsoft that will enable all the older files to be read in Word 2003. There is also a patch to return the default back on to block these files if you wish to do so.

I think going forward I will continue to save these files in PDF format. If anyone knows of any issues with this please chime in.

I've had no problems with saving documents as Adobe Acrobat PDF files. This actually makes it easier for users who do not have the latest versions of Word, or who do not have any version of Office.

Plus Acrobat Reader is available for all operating systems, Mac OS X, Windows & Linux to mention a few.

I have also found out that there is another good reason to save the files in PDF format. They can not easily be changed by anyone so the reports are secure.

We are using Office SP3 on Win XP Pro and I was getting these same errors trying to open docs in Word. I ended up going to support.microsoft.com and way down in there I found 3 patches, one for Word, Xcel, and Powerpoint.
I ran the one for Word. Instantly the errors were fixed and I didn't have to get into the registry.
I don't know if these are the same files shown in the Knowledge base but I'm much happier now. If someone needs these files, contact me.

People should look for the files under the line The .reg files you can use to change the security settings can be downloaded here found on that URL.
