Clear old entries from Bank Reconcile

Post by FCC1972 »

II am taking over from another bookkeepr and have old transactions from previous months / years sitting in the bank reconcile screen. I want to get rid of these entries and start fresh with the January 2026 reconcile. How can I move forward and get rid of these entries? Do I clear them out with my January 2026 reconcile? Any help would be appreciated.

You can do that, no problem ... the issue will be if you don't get that 0.00 at the end of the reconcile. Then you have to spend the time to research each entry to make sure it cleared the bank.

Depending on how old the entries are, you may be able to do an accounting backup, then clear old data if you have data older than 7 years, which is what I have suggested in the past. The IRS only requires four years worth of data for income and expenses as seen in IRS Pub 1828 page 26. You can decide whether you really need to keep records older than 4 or 7 years, doing the backup will allow you to go back to that if necessary. If you decide to clear the old data, then the sequence is 'backup, delete old data, backup'.

Hope this helps.
