synchronizing data

Post by jvchurches »

Dear Expert(s):

Can you tell us if there's any way to synchronize two databases that started out as one set of data from the same Powerchurch 8.5 application? We had one Powerchurch application and data on one computer which was copied to another computer. Changes were since made to each over the last few months. Now we have some data changes on member status, address, birthday, activity codes, custom reports, etc in one database and other changes in another database :oops: . I have my doubts that these could easily be synchronized given we're talking about changes in a number of different kinds of data, but thought I'd check in with you before we eyeball review all records and make the changes necessary to ensure that all records are consistent in ONE database.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

unfortunatley there is no way to syncronize those 2 sets of data. It would be just figuring out which one has the most amount of data, causing the least amount of reentry.

I can't see why you're angry at the PC+ people on this ?? If you have people entering data into 8.0, as well as doing updates into 8.5 how could you expect a way to merge this type of data ?? They are very upfront about this, even including a pop up dialogue (at least in 8.5) that will tell the user that there is a newer version available, and you should not be using this older version for any data entry (or something like that).

In addition, how would any conversion program tell which bit of data was newer ?? Its not as if each and every table has a timestamp column that shows the date and time of each row entry.

Using PC+ since 1999.

Randy,

Is there a particular reason that you didn't carry forward your dataset when you upgraded each time?

Is the version 8 and 8.5 data for the same organization?

Since PC+ is a database, updates/improvements are many times made to the way the data is stored within the database (the schema).

You can not expect any program to maintain backward/upgrade compatibility across mutiple versions...especially when you (the user) are continually adding to the data set.

Perhaps a good reference on database management may be helpful to you in the future.

My $.07 worth,
