Setting up System Set up for email with AOL.

Post by ChrisH3040 »

Can anyone tell me the correct way to set up System Set up so that I can send inividual copies of contribution statements to members via email. I have AOL and contacted tech support. They said the incoming email server is imap.aol.com and the outgoing email server is smtp.aol.com and the port number is 587. I put smtp.aol.com in the system set up email tab portion that says "outgoing email server." I then performed a "test" and received the message, "Socket logging is enabled. Performance will suffer." After hitting "OK", I received "An error occured trying to connect. View log?" When I view log, I see this"

11/18/2004 3:34:54 PM <-- [00000093] 220 smtp-dtc14.proxy.aol.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.11/8.12.11; Thu, 18 Nov 2004 18:33:57 -0500
11/18/2004 3:34:54 PM --> [00000013] HELO Office
11/18/2004 3:34:55 PM <-- [00000000]

I need to know if there is something else I need to do to send copies of contributions via email with AOL. Anyone??

The port option is not currently implemented. However, this can configured into the system. It is a little late to get this into the next MR, which should be available Monday at the latest.

I'll squeeze the port option into the following MR. When will it be tested and released? I can not say, as I don't know how long it will take to get other things worked out and verified. It looks like you'll be able to add the port to the server, when I get it done. smtp.server.com:25
The :25 will not be required if the SMTP server is using the standard port. So this will not effect currently working setups.

Thanks Tracy. So does this mean I will be unable to send copies of contribution statements using AOL until the MR? Can I do it if I log in under Internet Explorer? IF so, how is this done?

You won't be able to send copies directly through email. The system logs in directly to AOL, your logging in through IE won't do anything to assist the process that does the mailing.

Of course, there is a way around this if you have another ISP that someone uses, like AT&T Global that requires an authentication. You can setup the system to use the SMTP server at that ISP, using the userid and password for that ISP.

You'll get your statements emailed out, but it may not be worth the trouble. I suspect the next MR will be out before end of year statements are needed in January, so it may be best to sit and wait.
