Got a question or comment about PowerChurch that doesn't belong anywhere else? Why not post it here!?

PC Version 9 Installed. What to do with Version 8.5?

Post by Ken Edson »

I have installed PC Version 9 and maintenance releases installed OK.
What steps should I take to remove Version 8.5?
Is there an accounting data file which was used by Version 8.5 and is not used by Version 9? If so, can it be deleted?

DO NOT, under any circumstances remove it. Keep it on your desktop.
Never Never delete an earlier version. Save at least 8.5, and 8.0, if you still have it. If you are worried about disk space, make a full backup of the complete previous versions program, to a CD, or DVD, using an external backup program. PC backup saves only the data files, You want to save the complete program. Power Church can only restore backups made in the same version. You may some day need to look up something in version 8.5. A backup made in 8.5 cannot be restored to ver 9, just as a version 8 backup cannot be restored to ver 8.5.

Well ... I wouldn't go as far as to say never remove it. I would do a complete backup of all data, burn the latest MR and that backup to a CD, , and then save the older version CD and the backup CD in a secure place.

I would keep the older version available on the network for about 3 months, however, I WOULD delete ANY of the PC+ icons that link to the older version so that no one will try to use that version to update new data. It is less likely with the new version 9, as it adds a notice to the older version so that when the older version starts, a notice is given that a newer version is installed. That said, removal of the older version's icon would insure that most users would not start the incorrect version.

Using PC+ since 1999.
