I wonder if there is something I should do to help the download of maintenance release. It says it is going to take 1 hour and 20 minutes to download it. i am on dial-up so don't have the option of a faster internet service. My computer is only a year old and the church bought a pretty good one so I would think all its parameters are sufficient.
i always choose save and i save it to my PC+ folder. I don't change the name of the MR -- I just let it copy over the old one. Is this hurting me as far as time? 90 minutes is just a long time to tie up the church phone.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Laurie
PS: I do try to stay off the internet when doing a download figuring that that is hurting me. However, I try to do other things on the computer so I am not just sitting here twiddling my thumbs!

Re: Maintenance Release problem
Laurie ... its the fact that you're on dial-up that's the problem, not overwriting the existing file. No matter what the speed of the machine is, you're limited to the size of the download pipe in use. The size of the maintenance release files are usually over 8 megs; dial-up downloads of that size take a very long time.peabodyumc wrote:I wonder if there is something I should do to help the download of maintenance release. The only other alternatives you may have are:
1. Convince the church fathers to install a DSL line, or
2. If you have a Broadband connection at home, or know of a friend who does, download the maintenance release there, and burn it to CD to take to church.
Hope this helps.

Neil is right. The Maintenance Release is just a program you download and run. It can be copied to a CD (it's much to big for a floppy) and taken to any computer that needs to be updated. The v9 MR is actually 22 MB, so it's not surprising that it's taking a really long time on dialup.
If all else fails, we can send you a CD with the MR on it. It costs $15 and that covers shipping and handling.

Thanks for the info. i figured that was the situation but thought it didn't hurt to ask. I work at an agency that has some kind of fast system that we are logged onto at all times. I may have to ask my friendly (not always!) IT guy if he could do that for me. Then i could cover both my home computer (the back up) and the church computer without taking so much phone time.
Thanks for the suggestion. I never realized that was a possibility. I guess the other thing -- if he can't do it for me -- is to download it to a CD at my house and then install it at the church from that CD. Thanks -- this was helpful!!
