Error: "This application has failed to start..."

Post by baylorr »

One XP system on a peer to peer network has suddenly stopped working. The complete error message says: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

Have uninstalled Network Install and reinstalled to no avail. PC is working on all the other desktops. Any suggestions?

This is actually an issue if your "server" is a Windows 98 or ME computer and your client is XP. Microsoft broke this in a hotfix.

Thanks for the response. We do have a WIN 98 server with XP clients and installed the latest service pack some time ago. We were aware of the hotfix problem and took care of that months ago and didn't experience any problems after installing the service pack until now and just on the one system.
The most recent change to this system was the installation of Norton Antivirus 2006 two weeks before the problem popped up.
