Data file location

Got a question or comment about PowerChurch that doesn't belong anywhere else? Why not post it here!?

Data file location

Post by jacktcolton »

We have Power Church installed currently using the data file at this location:
P:\PowerChurch\data which is a mapped network drive on our NAS.
I need to get rid of the old computer and install Power Church 11.5 on a ‘new’ PC also running Win XP. When I tried to do that Power Church only looked for the data file in:
C:\Program Files\PowerChurch\PCPlus115\ How do I get it to realize the data file is on a network drive?

Powerchurch always looks for the data under its primary\Version directory, always has. (IE: x:\Powerchurch\PCPLUS115\DATA) I'm trying to remember when Powerchurch didn't create a 'version' directory under the primary.

When running on a network, Powerchurch should be installed on the network server or, as in this case, on the network storage device.

When installing Powerchurch for a network storage device, this is how I do it:

1. I first map the shared drive on a 'server machine', I use the drive letter T: (for temp). I then load the CD and change the drive in the setup program to store the program to the T: drive instead of the C: drive.
Once the program is installed, I'll then run the upgrade (if upgrading) or restore a backup to load the data.

2. I then disconnect the network drive and delete the original mapping to the T: drive. I then share the Powerchurch directory with all permissions on the network using the NAS web interface, if the NAS drive was not setup to allow full file permissions to all.

3. I then map the shared Powerchurch to the drive letter P: (for Powerchurch) and using the Netsetup115.exe program located in the P:\Powerchurch\PCPLUS115\install directory, load the client side software on the client computer.

With version 11+, the program basically runs directly off the network. The Netsetup program just installs a small .DLL and a 'kickstart' program on the client and sets the registry. All the main executibles are stored on that networked drive.

FWIW ... when installing on a single PC (not networked), the installer normally setups the directories directly under the root ( C:\Powerchurch\PCPLUS115), and should not be loaded under the \Program Files directory.

Hope this helps.

This just came to mind. Its possible that the NAS directory was aliased or symlinked on the client machine, so that when Powerchurch looked for the [powerchurch root]\data directory, the OS sent it to the NAS machine.

That can be a problem if you have to install a more than one machine. Doing the installation as I laid out above makes it so much easier as all you need to do is map the Powerchurch directory, then run the Netsetup program, which does the rest.
