Help! Can you delete posted contributions??

Post by Belmont St. Baptist »

I accidently entered and then posted contributions on the wrong date. What is my recourse?
Thanks!

The only way I know how is to enter the contributions in as a negative contribution on the same date and then post. This essentially cancels out what you entered incorrectly. Then enter them all again on the proper date. Check before you post and then post. The net effect to your general ledger is zero.

Correcting Posted Transaction

Post by SBCTrustee »

Hello Everyone,

The word "delete" is a very bad word in true accounting. In other words you can't delete. You can correct. Think of the word "posted" to mean "made perment" in your records.

If the month has not been closed, then you simply reverse your previous entry through a general transaction for example:

orginal transaction Correcting Transaction
Debit Credit debit credit
Expense 100 100
cash 100 100

You would then change the posting month to the correct posting month & then re-enter you correct entry.

If the month is closed, then you can't post to it.

Did you happen to make a backup of your contributuions before they got posted? This is exactly why I make extensive use of backing up contributions and accounting before doing any posting. Then verify after the posting that something doesn't need correcting, before inputting any new contributions or accounting transactions. It's a lot easier to restore a backup, make the correction in the now unposted again data, than to have to make reversing and correcting transactions, which end up adding a lot of extra lines in your activity reports.

Well, not being an accountant, my semantics, such as "delete" are probably not in line with what would normally be used.
Just looking for options.
Thanks for the replies
