Is there a way to make unchecked the default for bulk emails

We are trying to set up a bulk emailing list -- any help and suggestions would be appreciated. We have email addresses for individuals but not for families. Thinking it would be better to make the default unchecked rather than going in and unchecking 1200 people. Suggestions or thoughts about this process would be appreciated!

The system is set with the bulk email as default, most people will enter the email address and then adjust the checkboxes at the time of that entry.
