Problem with e-mail

When I send group e-mail from the Activities & Skills section, I get the following error message on several (but not all) of the addresses:

enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself

Can anyone tell me what this means?

During the sending process, the connection to the server was interrupted in some way. If this continues to happen, you can reduce the number of messages sent per minute. Each time the pause occurs, the connection to the server is reestablished.

Okay, thanks for the info. How do I reduce the number of e-mails sent per minute?

System Wide:
File -> System Setup Options -> E-mail -> Use advanced sending options

Per User: (only as override of system wide)
File -> User Setup Options -> E-mail -> Advanced Options -> Use advanced sending options

I would start with a number of e-mails below where the failure started.
