deleting backup files

How long is it necessary to keep the backup files saved? I have them saved on an thumbdrive.

As long as you want them. Its really up to you. That said, I would think about getting a free Dropbox account for disaster recovery in case you lose the thumb drive. I keep a copy on a network driver locally as I have the system setup to automatically backup, and copy that to Dropbox.
