We have a problem getting accurate alphabetical listings. We've been dealing with this since 1992. We have a large Dutch membership with lots of names with Van, de, De, Berg. When I print the reports we see names like VanWyk be listed ahead of Vandelune. What I've done from way back is to take all spaces out of the last names in an effort to solve this problem but it seems like uppercase takes priority. Member Van Wyk really should have a space in his name. "Van de Lune" should also have the spaces.
Same with Dehaan and DeJager.
Another way I've tried to solve this is I named a spare field "Sort names" and then put all last names in UPPERCASE and no spaces. Works ok for custom reports but not the canned reports.
Are other churches having this problem? If so, how do you handle your names.
