Accepted Posting Practice

Post by RLM »

Is it a generally accepted accounting practice to cut a check for a date that is in the month prior to when the check was posted? For instance, I cut a check on March 31st for our pastor with whom we have an agreement to pay 1/2 of his self-employment tax. The check was to cover the 1st quarter taxes that he has to pay (1/2 of them). I want to show this amount in April because the 4th quarter taxes of 2007 were posted in January of 2008. Is this acceptable, or must it be posted in the month that the check was issued in order to be properly accounted for?

I have end of the month and beginning of the month checks I have to write and I do them all at one time. The end of the month checks are dated for the last day of the month, The beginning of the month checks are dated for the first day of the month. When I post these transactions in Fund Accounting, I post the end of the month checks to their month and the beginning of the month checks to their month. As an example, Mar 31 checks post to March 2008 and April 1 checks post to April 2008.

I don't think this violates any generally accepted accounting principles.
