Restoring files

Recently lightning hit our main church computer and ruined our power supply and damaged our hard drive. Fortunately, we had a backup of the files on a cd. In an effort to try to keep from getting behind, I installed a copy of the program on the church clerk's computer until we could get the church's machine repaired. The church clerk's computer does not have a cd r/w so I backed up all data files on a floppy disc. When I try to restore the files from the floppy to the church computer, now that it is repaired, I get an error message. Fortunately we did not enter a lot of information but we would hate to lose it. We are not trying to be dishonest by installing the program on another machine. We were just trying to not get too far behind. The cd backup restored the files on the church computer just fine but I would like to update them with what we entered from the time of the damage with what is on the floppy. The only files that were changed were membership and profiles. Can it be done? If so, how?

There is no reason why you would get an error from the floppys, if the backup was from the same versions. Exactly what error were you getting ??

You could try doing another backup to floppy from the clerk's computer and see if that works. However, a better idea would be to see if you could get a USB external drive,USB 'key or thumb drive' or USB ZIP drive, and use that to backup the files. Then you can plug that into the repaired machine and restore.

FWIW ... I don't believe you are being dishonest using the software on another machine. You do have a license to network the software across all computers in your church. In this case, you were running the software as a standalone, when it failed, you had to move the software to another stand alone computer, really, no problem in this.

Actually, the way we license the software is to the church, not to a particular individual. So, as long as you're using the software for the business of one church, you can install on as many computers and have as many users as you need. Some churches have 3 or 4 computers and are not networked, and they all want PowerChurch access. They keep each other up to date using backup/restore. A lot of our customers will take the software home with them and install there to work and bring backups back in to the church. Our license is designed to facilitate those types of situations.

fbcdesha, the suggestions NeilZ has made would be the same thing we'd tell you here. Also, if we had the error message, that would help in troubleshooting. An educated guess would be to run netsetup on the old (fixed) computer. Some of the system files may not have been restored properly, and will need to be reinstalled.

I had forgotten about that ...

I will take a look at the netsetup and see if that will help me. I don't have the exact message but I will get it if the netsetup doesn't cure my problem. Thanks for all of the help.

Is netsetup required even if I am not running the program on a network? How do I go about running the netsetup? Just put in the cd and browse the cd to find it and run it?

Netsetup.exe should already exist in your x:\Powerchurch\pcplus9 directory.

All netsetup does is install some files that need to reside in your system folder. Included in these is the control for backup/restore. It's used to set up a workstation for network access, but it works the same way on a standalone machine.

The file is actually named netsetup9.exe in v9. It was 'winstall.exe' in v.2, 'setup.exe' in v7, 'netsetup.exe' in v8 and v8.5. That's the PowerChurch history lesson for the day.

I ran the netsetup.exe on the repaired computer and I also used a new disk to back up the church clerk's machine. Neither one worked. I get the following error message:

DynaZip UnZIP error
DynaZip UnZIP Error: Error creating output file (Problem extracting file(s))

The file that hangs it up is:

C:\PCPLUS85\Data\Data\APAUTO.CDX
