Names used for Contribution Statements

I can't understand how the contribution module decides how to create the name shown at the top of the statement. It seems to include the names of the sequence 1 and 2 family members who have an envelope number defined, with some programming to insert surnames if the household members use different surnames.
Can someone explain the logic, please?
