I would like to simply print out all birthdays in any given month?

I tried to do it with the sort between 2 dates, and it did not work.

Try using one of the "canned" reports.
Membership/Profiles/Reports/ and choose report "Selected Names, Addresses, Phones. Enter your dates as MM DD to MM DD, such as
10 01 to 10 31 for your October birthday list.
I just tried it and it works fine.
