I'd like to purge those members who have not either attented or given during the recent two years. I know that I can scroll membership profile and delete them one by one, but I have not found a way to delete profiles more quickly by say tagging them and then deleting all tagged profiles.
Any ideas?

There isn't a way to do this. Part of the reason is that you should also delete the Mailing List profile, and if you delete that, then there's a cascade delete that will clean up any personal profiles.
That said, you should NOT delete any member for at least THREE years after their last contribution per IRS rules. You have to maintain that contribution data until that time has elapsed. You could just keep backups, but the easiest way is to just keep them on the system, change their profile statuses to something like "Member, Inactive" and uncheck all the boxes on the Mailing List Profile.
