Import causing PowerChurch to shut down

I'm trying to import into the membership module using an excel file. I am using Office 2000 and have saved the file as an Excel 97/5 worksheet. The error message I am receiving is "Power Church has stopped working" and it occurs BEFORE I get a chance to enter the mailing category. Also, the date registered is a date field with 8 characters. However, that format does not appear to be an option in Excel so I am assuming the 3/14/1998 is the correct one? Thanks for any help you can send my way.
