Use the 'Check in for non-family member'.

In this case, Non-Family member means that the person being checked in is not listed under the Mailing List profile that defines the family in Powerchurch.

IE:

Tom & Jenny have kids Sam, and Mary. Joe is Tom's father, and granddad to Sam & Mary.

Joe comes to church with Sam & Mary. They do not show under Joe's family, as they are children to Tom & Jenny, so they get checked in as Joe's 'Non-Family" members.

As far as Johnny's friend, if he is not currently listed in the system as the child of an existing parent. I would get as much info as possible to add the Parent's information into the system as visitors, and add the friend as the child under the Parent.

Then check the child in as a "non-family" member.
