I purchase checks from DYNAMIC Systems in a laser bottom (8 1/2" x 7") check. Up until this point I have used an ink jet (HP 1220C) printer which required that I place them 'face down', only in the total quantity of checks that I intended to print (because PowerCHURCH prints from the largest number down to the smallest), prior to printing the checks.
This year, I decided to purchase a laser printer and purchased an HP Color Laser Printer 1518ni. This is not a real high end (actually it's toward the lower end of the spectrum) printer, but sufficient for my needs, as well as within my price range. I got it home and read through the documentation and realized that it would not print my checks at 8 1/2" x 7" as my Ink Jet printer had been doing without changing the printer driver to a 'custom' setting. To my disappointment, I found that even changing the 'custom' settings (which were within the specs listed) would not allow me to print these checks. I contacted HP Customer Support and asked them to tell me out-right if this printer would print corporate checks at the dimensions listed above. They replied that this printer 'WILL NOT PRINT 8 1/2" x 7" PAPER. Fortunately I was able to return the printer within two weeks of owning it and received a full refund. I say this so that no one else has to agonize over purchasing a printer for printing this style of check, only to get it home and realize that it will not work for this application and then have to drive 70 miles in order to return it.
I know, the obvious solution is to purchase checks that are a full 8 1/2" x 11" in size. However, I have recently purchased 500 checks that are attached to a very low volume account. which makes it impractical.
All of that to ask this - can someone on this forum help me locate a color laser printer ($400-$800) range, that will do what I want it to do? I talked to a retailer in Des Moines, IA yesterday and THEY could not even give me an answer. Wow, was I disappointed at that news. Now I am back on the HP 1220C
Any guidance would be appreciated. At this point, I am stuck..
