How do I correct uncollected social security tax from an employees pay? The checks were issued in a previous quarter so the checks need to be corrected with the social security withheld. I also need to pay the social security due on the 941 report.
Thanks,
Vicki Shirley

Re: Social Security Deduction
Have the employees already cashed their payroll checks?
(I don't know the answer to this) Can you resubmit your quarterly report with corrected numbers?
If not, you could take double out this quarter, and pay any appropriate penalty.

Re: Social Security Deduction
Then you probably don't want to reissue the checks.
Our trusty bookkeeper does our payroll so well, that I haven't had to pay too much attention to the particulars. I think I would double up on the social security this quarter until the amount is correct. ( and that may involve paying a penalty, but I am not sure of that)

FWIW ... if I remember right, as long as you pay the SS and Medicare withholding by the end of the month, you shouldn't have a penalty.JohnDMeyers wrote:Then you probably don't want to reissue the checks.

I agree with John, and don't forget the employer tax at 6.2%, employee is still 4.2% as Congress extended the tax reduction.
