Item posted to 2 different months

A check was written from our benevolence account in December 2012. It posted in December 2012 and also in January 2013. The transaction shows up on both income and expense reports. When I went to reverse the transaction, it shows 2 identical transactions. If I want to reverse the January one, would that be the one on the "top" of the list or the bottom.

I have not closed out the month of January yet so I can fix this problem...

We write manual checks and then I enter them on the computer (which is why I can still have January open). I also had a baby recently and am very behind, but need to get caught up!

The the transaction should show the posting date and month in the View Posted Transactions list.
