I've read through some of the old forums, and know I can renumber a line item, but I don't know if I can reuse the number.

Example: I have item 01-1234-999 that shouldn't be "999"--which we generally used for "misc."
I need to change 01-1234-999 to something else: 01-1234-998. No problem there, right?
But then I need to set up a new 01-1234-999 to use for "misc" in that expense category. Is this possible?

Yes, once you change the number to -998, then -999 will be free and you can add a new account with that number.
