2024 general instructions for forms w-2 and w-3

Curious to know if most of you have decided to process w-2 and w-3's with the old 2023 instructions or if you are waiting for the updated 2024? If you go to the IRS website and look at the current instructions, it is 2023. If you do a search for the 2024 instructions, it is still in DRAFT format and states - Do not file forms and do not rely on draft instructions. The latest draft was updated on 1/16/2024. Ugh...I just want to get them done.

According to the site, it says "Due date for filing with SSA. The due date for filing 2023 Forms W-2, W-2AS, W-2CM, W-2GU, W-2VI, W-3, and W-3SS with the SSA is January 31, 2024, whether you file using paper forms or electronically. Beginning with the tax year 2023 forms (filed in tax year 2024), you may complete and print Copies 1, B, C, 2 (if applicable), and D (if applicable) of Forms W-2, W-2AS, W-2GU, and W-2VI on IRS.gov to provide to the respective recipient. " It's the correct form and instructions (https://www.irs.gov/instructions/iw2w3).

Um ... when you file taxes, you look for instructions based on the tax year you're filing for, in this case 2023 tax year. The program is correct and has the correct rules for filling in the forms.

If you go to the IRS.GOV page, mouseover on the Forms & Instructions link, a pulldown menu appears listing the most recent forms. If you select W-2, it goes to a page for the W-2 and has a header in the middle of that page that says Current Revision. This is usually the form and instructions for the tax reporting year, in this case 2023.

The instructions include the paragraph What's New, which starts with this:

[i}Forms W-2 (including Forms W-2AS, W-2GU, and W-2VI) redesigned. Beginning with the tax year 2023 forms (filed in tax year 2024), .....

As that line says, these are the instructions for 2023 tax filings, which are filed in 2024. Most (if not all) current IRS forms & instructions are the ones to be used for the current tax filings, which is filing for the tax year 2023.
