I would like to move the data files for Power Church to our church's server so that if my hard drive were to crash I wouldn't lose my data and I would be able to reinstall lthe program and begin running immediately without having to install from backup. Is that possible? I am not saying that I want to run Power Church from a network server, I am saying I want to access just the data file on our network drive that we have specifically set up for my accounting program data files. We have done that for years using Quicken. I just starting using PC this month.

If it is possible, which files or folders should I move over to the network drive?

Its really not possible, as Powerchurch data files must be co-located with the program. That said, why don't you want to run Powerchurch from the network server instead of from a standalone computer ??

From the way the question was asked, I'm assuming that the program is also being used by others but that you want to keep your accounting files separate. In reality, this defeats the entire purpose of the integrated program. You can have multiple areas using the same program, yet areas of the program can be locked for unauthorized users. In all the churches I've setup Powerchurch, the integrated program is used as designed, and there has been no problems with anyone accessing areas they should not be.

That said, if you wish to keep the accounting files separate, then the only way to do protect the data is to make sure you have good backups kept on the server, with copies kept offsite.

We have PowerChurch running on a network harddrive, and after each session, we email a copy of the backup file offsite.

No more burning CDs. It's really effortless.

Actually, I am the only person using the program. We have a different membership database program which has an accounting program that I don't like. So I bought PC for my accounting.

So if I want to move PC from my computer hard drive to the network drive, how would I do that without starting over?

The easiest way to do this is to let the program do the work.

1. Do a backup of Powerchurch using the backup utility of Powerchurch,
2. Write down the Registration Number and Church Info found on the About Powerchurch screen (press ALT-F1).
3. Install Powerchurch on the Server from the Program CD. Start the program, and select NO when asked if you're migrating. Enter the data from item 2 when asked by the program. The program will build an empty database.
4. Restore the backup taken in step 1, again using the built-in utility.
5. Share the Powerchurch Directory from the server following the information given here:

6. Go to the client, and using the Add/Remove Programs (XP) and similar applet in Vista or Win7, Remove Powerchurch from the client. Go into My Computer and open the C: drive. Find the Powerchurch directory and Delete it. Then using the directions in the previous Knowledge Base article, Map the shared network drive to the client, and run the NetSetup10 program to connect the client to the server.

You should now be able to open Powerchurch from the client, and run as normal.

Why do it this way ?? In this manner the setup program will set the proper registry entries on the server,
