Changing chart of accounts

We have been using PC for 6 years, and now realize we could really improve our reports if we reorganized some of the chart of accounts. We use Version 12.
I'm not certain if the past history of an account will follow if I change it's number.
For example: we have expense account for Phones & Internet, which was originally numbered so it fell in the "Administrative Expenses" category along with other office expenses.
We now prefer it to fall in the "Utilities" category for the various expense reports.
Is there a way to create and new expense account but have the old account history be included?
We have quite a few accounts we want to reorganize and I'd love to get that all done before I begin posting 2025 entries. Or will that matter?
