Transfer accounts option

I have a question on Transfer Accounts. How do they work? What differences are there if you have the "Use Transfer Accounts" box checked under Fund accounding preferences? What is the impact on the different reports etc. I understand how to make the entries, but need to know if anything different happens to the information as oppsed to a regular expense account. Thanks
