I have a new restricted account that I set up in December 2012. It appears that a transaction has posted twice, but I cannot see how. here's what I entered -
On December 18, 2012 - a check was written -
102.17 CR Cash Checking
102.17 DR expense account
102.17 DR Release account
102.17 CR Released from restriction account

On December 31,2012 a deposit was made-
2107.23 CR Cash restricted account

you would think that the 12/31/12 Balance sheet would show 2005.06 in the restricted fund, but it actually shows 1902.89.

Is there a report that I can run that might show where I've got this expense twice? I've run an Account Activity report. Thanks for your help - I'm sure that it will be obvious what I've done as soon as someone else points it out

Check the detail changes in equity report. Does it show twice on this report? If it does check the close to account for the expense account. All expense accounts should close to the unrestricted equity account.

The only accounts that should close to the donor restricted equity account are the income account and the specific release account.

I ran that report and actually the expense amount only shows once and it's for $102.17. However, the income column show $2005.06 instead of the actual deposited amount of $2107.23. I ran an Account Activity report for 2012 for that income account and it shows $2107.23.

Well, I just found my own answer. I ran the "Account Close to Report" and found that the expense account was closing to the equity account in addition to the income account. I changed it to close to the Unrestricted Net Assets account like all the other restricted expense account and, lo and behold, the December Balance Sheet looks just fine! Thanks for pointing me to the accounting reports that I hardly ever use!

I am glad you found it. We added the account close to report because it was hard to diagnose problems like this.
