Importing Contribution Data from PC8 to PC10

Post by caj »

We have just installed PC10 and successfully restored from disk the accounting fund information which was set up on another computer. How do we import the contribution data and personal profile information from PC 8 on the computer where PC10 will be resident?

You can't.

Here's the issue.

The database versions are different, thus you can't just 'restore' or import from one to another. You can pay to have Powerchurch tech support do this for you, but there is a way you can do this yourself.

However, I would need to know what version of Powerchurch the accounting data was being stored on.

FWIW ... you should have gone to version 11 rather than version 10, as 11 has improved many areas of the program.

I'm going to give you an example of how to do this, and I hope you still have the accounting data on a computer that is running Powerchurch. I'm also going to assume that by Accounting you only mean Funds Accounting/Payroll/Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable and NOT Contributions. I'm also going to assume that the accounting program is running version 10 on a separate computer. If its running a different version, then do not follow these instructions.

1. Uninstall Powerchurch v10 completely. Using My Computer delete the Powerchurch folder and all subfolders.
2. Install v10 on the computer where v8 is running.
3. Start v10, it will ask if you're upgrading from an earlier version, select yes, and the system will search for the version 8 files, and convert them. It will reindex the database, then close.
4. Do a backup of the Accounting files (and ONLY the accounting files using the built-in backup utility. (again, I'm assuming accounting was running on version 10)
5. Restore the backup from step 4 to the version 10 program.

Now you've migrated to the new version.

BTW since you've already migrated the accounting to v10, you can do the backup from the current database before you remove Powerchurch and delete the Powerchurch folders. You can then use backup to restore the accounting to the single, combined database.

See the next rock for another scenario.

This scenario assumes that accounting is running on version 8 as is the membership and contribution modules.
This is a very straightforward process.

1. Uninstall version 10, and delete the folder and subfolder.
2. Do a backup of the accounting (and only the accounting) database using the Powerchurch backup utility, from the computer running accounting under Powerchurch v8.
3. Restore the backup from step 2, to the v8 program running membership and contributions.
4. Install version 10 on that computer. Start the program, when asked if you are upgrading, select yes. The system will convert the data to the v10 database, reindex, then close.
5. Restart Powerchurch v10, you've migrated all your data properly.

Again, this is all guesswork until I know what version your accounting was being run under.
