We received a check from a long time member this week asking us to put it towards her 2012 contributions. Her husband was in the ICU for a few weeks leading up to the end of the year so I want to help her but I'm not sure if I legally should. We wouldn't be depositing the money or posting it to fund accounting until our first 2013 deposit so I would strictly be adding it to the contribution module. Any advice?
Thanks,
Erica

Re: 2012 contribution received in 2013
If the check was mailed before the end of 2012 it can be credited to 2012 giving. If it was delivered to the church after 12/31 by the contributor it can not legally be credited to 2012 contributions even if the check date is before the new year. This is the strict interpretation of the of IRS rules on end of year giving.

Okay then the question is "If the check was mailed before the end of 2012 it can be credited to 2012 giving." How do you perform the task??
