IS there a way to post contributions without using envelope numbers?

One word answer here no. The envelope number is how the contribution module connects to the membership module.

To flesh out the reply, the envelope number ties the Membership Module's Personal Profile which contains the contributor's name, as well as the Mailing List Profile which contains the contributor's address, to the Contribution data.

So if you don't use envelopes, you can think of the number as the Contributor's Account Number.
