Do you photocopy checks?

Dear fellow Powerchurch users, do you photocopy checks before depositing them?
We have not but our new minister prefers that we do.
Would love to hear your opinions.

We do not ... frankly that is too much information for the church to be holding on to. You have a name, bank, account number and example of a signature all there and; unless locked in a very secure safe, a nightmare liability issue.

Powerchurch keeps track of all the checks, and if needed, check numbers, so I can't see why the additional information is needed.

I used to copy them for data entry purposes and then destroy them. I now scan the copies along with offering envelopes and save the file in a secure directory which only I have access to. I then destroy all the paper copies. I did have a data entry error at the end of last year which I was able to resolve because I had the check copies. I do agree with Neil however that having this information can be a liability issue if not kept very secure.

Thank you. I also see a serious liability issue because we definitely do not have a secure place to store records.
Also, lining up all the checks on the photocopy machine is not easy. They tend to fly around and I'm always afraid one will get lost behind the copier when I'm not looking.
I have had one or two issues in the past where the information in the memo line of the check was critical to review, and one where the payee line needed to be rechecked. In each case we were able to ask the bank for a photocopy of the check.
