Check Reader

Post by AnnR »

Just wondering if anyone else has a problem when the check number has 5-digits. Would this be a check reader problem or a software problem. So far I have noticed it with all 5-digit check #s.

Have you checked to make sure that the reader is reading the number properly by testing it .

You can test the layout your check reader uses by opening Notepad and scanning a check. A string of characters similar to the following should appear. 0000125689/0288069/5235

That is the Transit Number/Account Number/Check Number. I do note that the Powerchurch examples show 4 digits for the checks, If when you're scanning checks and only the first 4 numbers of a 5 (or more) check number is being used by the system, then I would think that the program does have a bug that needs to be fixed.

Let us know the answer to this.

I just tested it with a 9 digit check number and it worked fine.

The data structure allows up to 20 digits in the check number field.

Well, that eliminates the software :)

You may want to do the test. Here's the full set of instructions:

Just noticed your post on the forum. I also had some problems with the check reader and check numbers not being picked up properly. After going through all the testing I discovered that checks from certain banks just don't read properly. My problem was with checks from Capital One 360. Just so happens they were my personal checks to the church. What I ended up doing was modifying the check number after running it through the check reader. It was however a learning experience on how the check reader works. Since I now do automatic EFT through Vanco, it is no longer a problem.
