Unfortunately, no the system uses the envelope number to link the contributions database to the membership database. That said, you can just use consecutive numbers to take care of this issue, but you'll have to look up the donor by name each time you enter contributions using the 'lookup'.

It's only one extra keystroke (F2) or mouse click to look up by name when entering contributions. This is detailed in the Demo videos linked below. Just click on the Contributions chapter in the playlist to jump straight to it.
