Our church received a donation by mail. The check was dated Dec. 29, 2006.
I posted our Dec. 31 contributions to December even though they were deposited in the bank in January.

I know the donor would consider the giving to be in 2006. Should I add it back into December receipts? I think not. But I wonder about the contribution statement that I will send to them. For their sake, should I include it with December?

If the post mark on the envelope it was mailed to you in was dated Dec. 31 or earlier it should be posted as a 2006 contribution. If post marked Jan. 01 or after it is a 2007 contribution. This is per IRS.

Exactly ... we made it known via the monthly bulletin, as well as in the Sunday bulletins through December, that funds received up to midnight Dec 31st, would be credited as 2006.

Anything aflter, even if dated prior to Dec 31st, would have to be counted as 2007.
